In 1967, Sarah Doss and Ann Doss Steele put their talents to work and Drapery Boutique (now Drapery Boutique, Inc.) was born. Ann, a recent graduate of UNC - Greensboro, with a degree in interior design, and Sarah, a gifted artist and seamstress, blended their interests and skills to become a retail supplier of fine custom window and bedding products.
Sarah’s husband Jerry Doss, (Ann’s brother) was making part time contribution to the business by assisting in the delivery and installation of window treatments while maintaining full-time employment elsewhere. It soon became evident that he needed to be fully involved. With Jerry’s knowledge of business and additional expertise in the fabrication process he joined the business as a full time partner and became President of the company.
The quality craftsmanship, interior design and the personal service which brought clients from Greensboro to Raleigh, N.C. soon came to the attention of large retail chains. Drapery Boutique, Inc. entered the wholesale fabrication market when J.C. Penney began to use them as a workroom for their Custom-made Drapery Department.
Sears and Roebuck also began to use them for their custom fabrication needs and Drapery Boutique, Inc. soon became the Southeast Regional Workroom for Sears. At that time, wholesale fabricating became the dominating part of the business. A larger building was built and additional employees were hired to meet growing demands of the business. The relationship with Sears continued until the late ‘80s, when major marketing changes in Sears Custom Programs brought a close to that phase of the business.
Drapery Boutique made the shift from serving the retail chains to serving individual designers and fabric shops. Today, the clientele spans much of the Eastern Region of the United States, and has reached across the globe as far as Saudi Arabia and China.
With over 40 years experience, Drapery Boutique, Inc. is still owned and operated by the founding members along with second-generation family. Because of their special concern for the customers product, their expertise in the field, their quality workmanship and personal customer service, Drapery Boutique, Inc. has earned the reputation of being one of the best workrooms in the industry.
